Chapter 148: Stop Overthinking, Be a Good Girl (Second Update)
Jiang Muwen stared at the screen, and her phone almost slipped out of her hand. She steadied herself and then gently tapped the screen with her finger.
The call went through.
"What's wrong?" The voice on the other end of the line sounded thoroughly sleepy. Even without seeing Wen Yichen in person, Jiang Muwen could vividly picture his drowsy expression.
"N-nothing. I dialed by mistake," Jiang Muwen explained flurriedly. "Did I wake you up?"
"It's alright."
"Then go back to sleep." Jiang Muwen felt a bit guilty and didn't dare tell Wen Yichen that she was suffering from insomnia.
"Can't sleep?" As soon as Jiang Muwen finished speaking, Wen Yichen's voice reached her ears once again, sounding somewhat tired and slightly low and hoarse.
With that, Jiang Muwen let out a soft murmur of agreement.
Her response was barely a whisper, but Wen Yichen still heard it. The boy rolled over. He was truly exhausted. Lying flat on his back in bed, he quietly closed his eyes while his long-fingered hand still held the phone. The hazy moonlight fell like silk across the boy's bed, gently tracing the slight upward curve of his lips.
"Is it because of tomorrow's weekly quiz?"
The boy asked tentatively.
As his voice trailed off, Jiang Muwen murmured in agreement once more. After a brief moment of quiet in the air, she cautiously spoke up again, "Do you think tomorrow's weekly quiz will be difficult?"
When Jiang Muwen finished, a heavy silence fell over the other end of the line. After a long while, his low, raspy voice came through the earpiece. "Do you want the truth or a lie?"
Wen Yichen's words instantly piqued Jiang Muwen's curiosity—there was even a lie? She pondered for a moment, feeling as though she could already guess part of it before he even said it. "The lie."
"The lie is: don't worry, you'll pass."
"..." Perhaps Wen Yichen was simply too tired, and with his reason not yet fully awakened, he dared to say anything. Since he had put it that way, Jiang Muwen felt a bit more reassured. "Then what's the truth?"
"The exam paper is very difficult. Instead of wasting time thinking about random things, you'd better get a good night's sleep."
At this moment, Wen Yichen's tone was unexpectedly soft, as if it could melt straight into Jiang Muwen's bones. Yet it made some sense after all; weekly quiz papers were always set by the teachers themselves, and Class A's papers were bound to be much harder than those of other classes.
"Go to sleep, stop overthinking, be a good girl." The final word seemed to emerge directly from Wen Yichen's throat. His voice was somewhat husky, carrying a hint of indulgence within the roughness, and blending inadvertently with a touch of subtle sexiness.
Jiang Muwen had zero resistance to this kind of voice. As his words faded, she felt as though every single bone in her body was about to melt away from sweetness.
She paused for a moment, waiting until she had somewhat regained her composure before speaking softly, "Goodnight."
With that, there was no response whatsoever from the other end. He had fallen asleep?
Thinking this, Jiang Muwen pulled the phone away from her ear. Looking at the still-lit screen, she couldn't bear to hang up. She gently placed the phone beside her pillow and slowly closed her eyes.
Wen Yichen was right; the test paper was extremely difficult, and Jiang Muwen had not the slightest clue. When the exam ended, her entire face turned green. The feeling was akin to having learned mixed martial arts for only a short while before suddenly being thrown into bare-handed combat with a polar bear. Naturally, her exam score was far from satisfactory.
Staring at the glaring grade on the test paper, Jiang Muwen slowly grew numb. A moment later, she mechanically folded the paper and shoved it into her desk compartment.
"Hey boss, there's a sports meeting at the end of the month. Are you signing up?"
Just as Jiang Muwen was sitting there in a daze, Yin Lize's voice reached her ears.
A sports meeting?
Now that she calculated it, the annual sports meeting was indeed fast approaching. Yin Lize hadn't cared much for studying in the past, so whenever any minor activity unrelated to academics came up, he would enthusiastically recommend himself to the teachers and take on the role of organizer. Over time, whenever any event happened at school, the head teacher would automatically turn to Yin Lize to take charge.
Though called the organizer, his job was actually just to round up classmates to sign up. Whether the students responded with genuine enthusiasm or out of fear of Yin Lize, every single event never lacked participants.
Jiang Muwen glanced at Yin Lize. In the past, she definitely would have signed up, but right now, she seemed completely devoid of energy. Hesitating for a moment, she slumped over her desk. "You go sign up. I'm sitting this one out."
This exam had dealt her blow after blow, as if extinguishing every ounce of her enthusiasm.
Seeing that Jiang Muwen had zero intention of signing up, Yin Lize felt it was quite a pity. "Come on, don't be like that! Didn't you use to be super enthusiastic back in the first year of high school?"
"My grades are too terrible, so I'd better forget it. I need to focus on studying..." Jiang Muwen mumbled, burying her face in her arms.
At this moment, her mind seemed made up, and her fighting spirit was entirely gone.
"I'm telling you, you're just putting way too much pressure on yourself, which is why you're like this. Relaxing every once in a while is much better," Yin Lize said, looking at Jiang Muwen and continuing to patiently persuade her. "Besides, so what if you flubbed an exam? Don't take it to heart. The more you care about it, the easier it is to mess up."
Seeing that Jiang Muwen remained silent, Yin Lize pressed on, "Even I only improved during the monthly exams, and I've bombed these recent weekly quizzes big time. The future is still long, boss, you mustn't lose heart!"
As he spoke, Yin Lize turned around, pulled his own test paper out of his desk drawer, and spread it out. "Look, if you add my score and yours together, we barely cleared the passing mark by a few points."
Perhaps Yin Lize's method of comforting others was simply too unique; at his words, Jiang Muwen couldn't help but chuckle.
That's right. The future was still long. To lose heart this early on would mean she was far too easily defeated.
Jiang Muwen slowly straightened up. Driven by Yin Lize's words, her drained energy seemed to rush back into her all at once. She looked at Yin Lize solemnly, as if making some momentous decision. "What you're saying makes sense."
"So—" Yin Lize said with a grin, cheerfully fishing a pen out of Jiang Muwen's pencil case. The next second, the pen tip hovered over his own failing test paper. "What event are you signing up for, boss?"
With that, Jiang Muwen began to ponder. Last year she had participated in the relay race. Although she placed, the fall she took that day remained fresh in her memory; the mere recollection of that pain made her involuntarily draw in a sharp breath.
Once bitten, twice shy. Before Jiang Muwen could make up her mind, Yin Lize's voice sounded again. "How about the relay race? Just like last year."
Before Jiang Muwen could reply, Yin Lize muttered an affirmative to himself, and without waiting for her to say anything, he jotted down Jiang Muwen's name and event on the paper.
