Chapter Two: The President Comes to Apologize in Person
Chen Yang returned home. Though it was called his home, in truth it belonged to his mother-in-law and father-in-law.
That's right—Chen Yang was a live-in son-in-law.
His wife's name was Qin Muxue. She now ran a small company of her own in Linhai, though business was far from booming.
Despite being the president of her own company, the only reason she and Chen Yang ended up together was due to the connections his mother managed to establish before her death, which eventually led to their marriage.
Yet, even after five years of marriage, Chen Yang had no particular skills to offer. He could only earn a living by delivering takeout, much to the obvious disdain of his in-laws.
As soon as Chen Yang stepped inside, he saw a middle-aged man in his forties with slicked-back hair, exuding an air of authority, sitting on the sofa.
His mother-in-law, Han Qin, sat beside this man, her face adorned with a sycophantic smile. “President Liu, Muxue’s company truly has enormous potential. If you invest, you won’t regret it.”
“Your daughter is quite beautiful, too,” the man replied with a broad grin.
Han Qin, well aware of his meaning, laughed flirtatiously. “Here’s the thing, President Liu—if you invest first, I’ll arrange opportunities for you and Muxue. Frankly, I’ve long wanted her to remarry.”
Standing nearby, Chen Yang heard every word of Han Qin’s conversation, and he felt a surge of irritation.
Without hesitation, Chen Yang strode over and urged, “What kind of president are you? Leave, now.”
At his words, Han Qin’s temper flared. She glared at Chen Yang, snapping, “Get lost! I’m securing investment for Muxue’s company. Don’t ruin this for me!”
“What investment? Isn’t this just a transaction?” Chen Yang’s retort was sharp and to the point.
He could have easily told his mother-in-law that he now possessed twenty billion, but he found no satisfaction in doing so. It simply seemed meaningless.
Besides, knowing Han Qin’s greedy nature, if she discovered he was now worth twenty billion, there was no telling how she’d try to exploit him. So, for the moment, he chose silence.
“Transaction? What nonsense! Go back to your room, now!” Han Qin stood up abruptly, barking at Chen Yang.
With a cold chuckle, Chen Yang replied, “Mother, don’t bring trouble to President Liu.”
“How am I troubling him? Explain yourself!” Han Qin said, thoroughly annoyed.
“Who knows, perhaps President Liu’s company will collapse because of your schemes,” Chen Yang replied.
“Ms. Han, I have other matters to attend to. I’ll be leaving now,” President Liu said, evidently displeased by the commotion, and stood up to go.
Han Qin hurried after him, apologizing profusely. “President Liu, I’m so sorry! Please don’t take it to heart. I’ll teach that boy a lesson. Do reconsider investing in Muxue’s company, please.”
Without a word, President Liu left.
After seeing him off, Han Qin turned on Chen Yang, her face livid. “You useless fool, kneel down!”
Chen Yang just laughed, “Mother, why should I kneel? Believe it or not, I could topple President Liu’s company with just a word.”
“I don’t believe you for a second! If you ruin Muxue’s investment, I’ll never forgive you. I’ll make your life miserable!” Han Qin fumed.
“Mother, who is President Liu anyway? Why can’t you see any merit in your own son-in-law?” Chen Yang shook his head, sighing.
“You have merit? Where? Show me. A man who can’t support his family is a failure, and you’re the biggest failure I know,” Han Qin replied scornfully.
Chen Yang couldn’t help but laugh aloud. Quarreling with his mother-in-law was unexpectedly entertaining.
He didn’t argue further, instead saying lightly, “Mother, just wait. I’ll show you a magic trick—let you witness the moment of a true miracle.”
“What nonsense are you spouting now?” Han Qin scolded, increasingly convinced that Chen Yang had lost his mind.
Upstairs, Chen Yang made a phone call—the very number his late mother had entrusted to him, belonging to the head of a major corporation.
His mother had told him: once the stocks yielded profit, he should invest a billion into the group, at which point the company would become his.
His next step would be to manage the group well—he had to do it well.
When the call connected, a strong male voice answered, “Hello?”
“Is this President Lin of Huading Group? I want to invest a billion,” Chen Yang said.
At the headquarters of Huading Group in the provincial capital, Lin Qianyao’s eyes widened. “How much did you say?”
“I want to invest a billion. My mother’s name was Xiao Yun,” Chen Yang answered softly.
Mentioning his late mother brought a fresh wave of sorrow to his heart.
“Oh, you’re Ms. Xiao’s son! Welcome, welcome,” Lin Qianyao replied, his excitement evident.
“Enough with the pleasantries. I want to invest a billion. That means Huading Group will be mine, correct?” Chen Yang asked.
“Yes, yes, of course! Five years ago, Ms. Xiao approached me when my group was facing difficulties. She promised that a large sum would one day be invested in my company. At the time, I could hardly believe it—but she wasn’t joking.”
“I’m simply carrying out my mother’s final wish. Tomorrow, the billion will be transferred. However, I want you to continue managing Huading Group,” Chen Yang said, his tone assertive.
“No problem at all! To be honest, Huading Group has been waiting five years for this investment,” Lin Qianyao replied earnestly.
“By the way, there’s a Huading company here in Linhai, headed by a President Liu. What’s the relationship between that company and your group?” Chen Yang inquired.
The President Liu in question was the very man Han Qin had been so eager to solicit for investment.
“If you want something done, I’ll see it through,” Chen Yang thought.
“That’s a subsidiary of our group,” Lin Qianyao explained.
“Really? I don’t care for this President Liu. He’s tried to disrupt my family. Handle him for me,” Chen Yang ordered.
“Is that so? I’ll take care of it immediately,” Lin Qianyao responded without hesitation.
“Good. Tomorrow, with the billion transferred, Huading Group will be mine,” Chen Yang said.
“Once you invest the billion, you’ll control eighty percent of the shares and become the majority shareholder. The group will be yours,” Lin Qianyao confirmed, unable to contain his excitement.
Chen Yang smiled. “Excellent. Deal with President Liu for me first.”
“Understood,” Lin Qianyao replied solemnly.
At seven in the evening, Chen Yang’s beautiful wife Qin Muxue returned home. Her skin was as fair as snow, her long hair cascading like a waterfall, her beauty dazzling.
They had been married for five years. Though their relationship had been rocky, it was at least manageable.
Yet, Chen Yang knew well that Qin Muxue was dissatisfied with his current situation. After five years, he was still just a deliveryman—she saw no future in him.
As soon as dinner began, Han Qin started complaining to her daughter. “Muxue, it was Chen Yang who ruined everything today. I invited President Liu from Huading to our home to help your company. Who knew this useless fool would drive him away?”
“Really? Is that true?” Qin Muxue asked in surprise.
At the same time, the gray-haired, slender father-in-law, Qin Guoshan, turned his gaze to Chen Yang.
Unperturbed, Chen Yang smiled calmly. “Mother, who is President Liu anyway?”
“How dare you—what are you worth?” Qin Guoshan replied coldly.
“I could ruin President Liu with just a few words,” Chen Yang said flatly.
Enraged, Han Qin stood up and looked at her daughter. “Muxue, did you hear that? He must have lost his mind from being poor.”
“Just eat your dinner. Why so much nonsense?” Even Qin Muxue looked at Chen Yang with exasperation.
None of them believed him. Their impression of Chen Yang as a useless man was deeply ingrained—no one would believe he could suddenly become impressive.
Buzz buzz!
Chen Yang’s phone began to vibrate in his pocket. He took it out and saw an unfamiliar number.
He answered and immediately put the call on speaker, saying to Han Qin, “Mother, listen carefully.”
President Liu’s trembling voice came through the phone, “Mr. Chen, about what happened this morning with you and Miss Qin, I apologize if I offended you. Please forgive me.”
Han Qin was stunned. “Isn’t that President Liu’s voice?”
“Is it?” Qin Guoshan looked at her in disbelief.
Chen Yang picked up the phone, switched off the speaker, and replied coolly, “Calling to apologize won’t change anything. If you’ve made a mistake, you must accept the consequences. Don’t call me again.”
