Chapter Fifty: This Medicine, Only I Can Obtain
Han Qin, her face full of indignation, said, "What did I do? Isn't it all because of you?"
"Because of me?"
When Chen Yang heard this, he could only smile helplessly, thinking to himself that his mother-in-law was about to start blaming him for everything.
Although he was somewhat displeased by her words, he didn't show it. Instead, he smiled with curiosity and asked, "Mom, what does this have to do with me?"
Han Qin frowned and said, "The yogurt in the fridge, you bought it, didn't you? I just drank a packet this afternoon, and now my stomach hurts terribly. Tell me, isn't it your fault?"
Chen Yang's face was written with helplessness.
He had no desire to quarrel with Han Qin; it was pointless. He decided to focus first on helping her feel better, so he said with resignation, "Mom, you're really something else. Even now, you're still trying to pin this on me."
"What do you mean, 'pin'? Who's pinning anything on you?" Han Qin protested, clearly dissatisfied.
"If this isn't pinning it on me, what is? Anyway, Mom, there's no point in arguing about this now. I think you need to go to the hospital right away," Chen Yang said.
Han Qin frowned, not replying.
Just then, Qin Muxue returned home.
Chen Yang was naturally delighted to see her. He had just been thinking of calling her, because Han Qin was a handful, and he felt only Qin Muxue could manage her.
The moment Qin Muxue walked in, Chen Yang smiled and said, "Honey, you're finally back."
Qin Muxue glanced at him, then her gaze fell on Han Qin, who was sitting on the sofa clutching her stomach. She hurried over, her face full of concern. "Mom, what's wrong?"
Han Qin replied, "I drank a packet of yogurt from the fridge this afternoon, and now my stomach hurts so much. It's all Chen Yang's fault—wasn't it him who bought the yogurt?"
Hearing this, Qin Muxue blushed slightly and said, "Mom, actually, I bought that yogurt. It has nothing to do with Chen Yang."
"You bought it?" Han Qin looked at her, a bit embarrassed.
Chen Yang seized the opportunity to lightly retort, "See, Mom? You accused the wrong person again."
"Ow, ow..." Han Qin, clearly upset and in pain, started moaning again, her anger flaring up along with the pain in her stomach.
Seeing this, Qin Muxue grew anxious and said to Chen Yang, "How can you still argue about this? Hurry up and take Mom to the hospital!"
"Of course, of course," Chen Yang nodded repeatedly.
In truth, he had wanted to take Han Qin to the hospital right away, but he felt awkward being alone with her. Now that Qin Muxue was home, he wasn't worried about Han Qin making a scene.
He quickly helped Han Qin outside, into the Mercedes G-Class. Qin Muxue drove them straight to the hospital.
On the way, despite the pain, Han Qin couldn't help chiding Chen Yang: "Chen Yang, look at this. Muxue, through her own hard work, is already driving such a nice car. When will you ever be able to buy her such a car?"
"Uh... Mom, I don't mean to burst your bubble, but when Muxue told you she bought this car herself, it was actually at my suggestion. I just didn't want to be too ostentatious. The truth is, I bought this car as a gift for Muxue. I'm sorry for keeping it from you until now," Chen Yang said calmly.
As soon as he spoke, Han Qin's eyes widened in disbelief.
When Qin Muxue first drove this luxury car home, Han Qin and Qin Guoshan were naturally curious about where it came from. If Chen Yang hadn't asked Qin Muxue to keep a low profile and say she bought it herself, she would have revealed the truth from the start. Qin Muxue, however, kept the secret, simply saying it was her own purchase, which made her parents proud.
Chen Yang had asked her to keep it quiet only to avoid unnecessary trouble. If he'd said from the start that he bought it for his wife, who knows what suspicions his mother-in-law would have had? He simply didn't want the hassle, so he had Qin Muxue tell a little white lie.
But now, Chen Yang didn't want to hide it anymore. He decided to lay his cards on the table: the car was his gift to Muxue. Otherwise, his mother-in-law would just keep nagging him about it in the car.
Han Qin stared at him, incredulous: "Chen Yang, who are you trying to fool?"
Chen Yang thought, "Just as I expected, mother-in-law doesn't believe me. Explaining this is a bit of a headache." He smiled and said, "Mom, the truth can't be faked, and the fake can't be true."
Qin Muxue, not wanting her mother to worry while she was ill, added seriously, "Mom, Chen Yang really did buy the car for me. Please don't doubt it, and please, stop worrying about these things. You're already sick."
Han Qin looked even more astonished.
Was this car really bought by Chen Yang? Could it be true?
She clutched her chest, feeling a jolt in her heart.
Regardless, Han Qin was quickly admitted to the First People's Hospital for a full checkup. When the results came out, they nearly gave Qin Muxue a fright. It turned out Han Qin's stomach pain wasn't caused by the yogurt at all, but by severe hyperglycemia combined with a liver cyst.
The doctor warned that if they'd delayed any longer, there could have been serious complications.
Qin Muxue felt a lingering fear upon hearing this.
High blood sugar had been an old problem for Han Qin, though she'd managed it reasonably well over the years. The liver cyst, however, caught Qin Muxue off guard—she hadn't expected her mother to develop a liver condition. On reflection, though, she realized that anger can harm the liver, and her mother did have a fiery temperament, not to mention chronic hepatitis for the past two years. It wasn't so surprising, after all.
No matter what, Han Qin's diagnosis was serious, and she was immediately hospitalized. Not long after she was settled in, Qin Guoshan, who had been out on some errands, rushed over upon hearing the news.
Qin Guoshan had always been devoted to Han Qin, and seeing her suffer made him deeply distressed.
At nine that evening, Chen Yang and Qin Muxue finally finished attending to Han Qin's affairs. Neither had eaten yet, and they were both hungry.
Chen Yang suggested they go out to buy some food, and Qin Muxue agreed.
Leaving the ward together, on their way to the hospital cafeteria, Chen Yang remembered that Lin Qianyao in the provincial capital knew many famous doctors. With his mother-in-law suffering from both severe hyperglycemia and a liver cyst, Chen Yang couldn't help but feel sorry for her. He smiled and said to Qin Muxue, "Muxue, Mom's high blood sugar is a real problem. I'll see if I can get her some good medicine to help her recover."
"What kind of medicine?" Qin Muxue asked with curiosity.
"Just some Chinese medicine," Chen Yang replied with a chuckle. He hadn't yet contacted Lin Qianyao, so he wasn't sure if he could actually get any good medicine.
"If you can manage it, that would be great," Qin Muxue said softly.
"Alright, I'll see what I can do," Chen Yang replied with a smile.
That night, Chen Yang and Qin Muxue ate dinner in the hospital ward. It wasn't until eleven o'clock that they finally went home.
With Han Qin ill, someone needed to care for her. Qin Muxue had originally planned to stay, but Han Qin insisted on having her husband, Qin Guoshan, look after her, saying she wasn't comfortable with anyone else.
Not wanting to argue, Qin Muxue agreed.
That evening, back at home, while Qin Muxue was washing up, Chen Yang sent a text to Lin Qianyao, explaining his mother-in-law's condition and asking if he could help find some good medicine for her recovery.
Lin Qianyao replied quickly, full of confidence, saying that this was a simple matter—after all, he knew plenty of master herbalists in the provincial capital.
The next day, while Chen Yang was at work, a courier arrived with the "Vitality Pills" Lin Qianyao had arranged, a total of ten pills, personally prepared by the national treasure-level master pharmacist Sun Shengfang.
These Vitality Pills, crafted by Master Sun himself, were extraordinary. Only someone of Lin Qianyao's standing could acquire them; it would be nearly impossible for an ordinary person.
That evening, Chen Yang happily brought the medicine to Han Qin's hospital room. Though she was weak, she was chatting on video with her younger sister, Han Xiang. When she saw Chen Yang enter, she looked up and asked, "Why are you here alone? Where's Muxue?"
Chen Yang didn't hide his purpose. Lifting the black bag in his hand, he said cheerfully, "Mom, I've brought you some medicine—something you can't just get anywhere."
