Chapter Sixty-One: So You Know Medicine Too
Qin Muxue listened carefully, trying to discern the voice. It did indeed sound like the landlady. A look of delight flashed in her eyes—if the landlady had come to visit in person, didn’t that mean there was hope for the rental?
She hurriedly said, “Yes, I think so. I’ll go open the door now.”
Qin Muxue quickly walked to the door, opened it, and saw a plump woman in her forties with permed hair. It was indeed the landlady of the storefront at the Dijinge Community from that morning, and joy lit up Qin Muxue’s eyes.
“Oh, Miss Qin, I’m so sorry to bother you at home like this,” the landlady said with a polite smile.
After all, before coming, Shen Donghua had briefed her thoroughly on what to say and do. So the landlady’s visit today was to sign the contract with Su Xiaoling.
Qin Muxue guessed that the landlady’s personal visit must be to sign the contract with Su Xiaoling, so she quickly smiled and said, “Please, come in.”
“Thank you, thank you.”
The landlady entered the villa with a broad smile.
Qin Guoshan was a courteous man. Seeing a stranger enter his home, he didn’t know the landlady, but still politely asked, “Have you eaten? If not, would you like something?”
The landlady quickly replied, “Yes, I’ve eaten. I’m here to see Miss Su. Miss Su, that storefront—you can rent it. The rent is sixty thousand a year. Do you want it?”
“How much is the rent per year?” Su Xiaoling was stunned by the words.
Had she heard correctly? Such a prime location for only sixty thousand a year? She’d be a fool not to rent it.
Su Xiaoling stood up from her chair, disbelief written on her face. “Auntie Li, are you joking with me?”
The landlady laughed, “Why would I joke? I’m not joking, not at all.”
Seeing this, Qin Muxue beamed at Su Xiaoling. “Xiaoling, aren’t you going to thank her and sign the contract right away?”
“Oh, oh.” Su Xiaoling nodded eagerly, her heart racing with excitement, though her mind was still a bit muddled.
How was it that the landlady, who had insisted on a hundred and fifty thousand a year before, had now slashed the rent by more than half?
Could it be because Chen Yang had pulled some strings?
Su Xiaoling couldn’t help but glance at Chen Yang, thinking that must be the only explanation. Only if Chen Yang had connections could he persuade the landlady to cut the rent by more than half. But how could Chen Yang have such influence?
Su Xiaoling decided not to dwell on it. She quickly signed the contract with the landlady, and after seeing her off, she turned to Chen Yang and asked, “Chen Yang, was it you who helped me?”
“It was probably President Shen,” Chen Yang replied.
In truth, it was Chen Yang who had helped Su Xiaoling behind the scenes. But he had no intention of making a big deal out of it in front of her, so he spoke modestly.
Su Xiaoling frowned. “But even if President Shen helped, it was only because you asked him.”
Chen Yang chuckled. “President Shen was just being generous, I suppose.”
“Exactly. If President Shen hadn’t been generous, could you have done it? I’d be left out in the cold.” Suddenly, Su Xiaoling switched her tone and teased Chen Yang.
Chen Yang thought to himself, Good grief, this girl really changes her tune in an instant.
At this moment, Qin Muxue advised, “Xiaoling, if Chen Yang hadn’t asked President Shen for help, President Shen wouldn’t have helped at all. You should thank Chen Yang even more.”
Su Xiaoling sat down on her chair, laughing. “I was just joking with you earlier. You don’t mind, do you?”
Chen Yang grinned. “Of course not, it was just a joke. I was joking with you too.”
“You’re impressive,” Su Xiaoling said with admiration.
Qin Muxue also sat down, looking at Chen Yang. “Chen Yang, I want to thank you on Xiaoling’s behalf as well.”
“It was all thanks to President Shen’s generosity. When I get the chance, I’ll thank him properly,” Chen Yang replied with a laugh.
As he said this, he couldn’t help but wonder if Shen Donghua would spit blood if he heard him say that.
“All right, let’s eat. Xiaoling, now that you’ve secured the storefront, you need to get started with renovations and enrollment,” Qin Muxue reminded Su Xiaoling.
Su Xiaoling stuck out her tongue at Qin Muxue. “Sister Xue, aren’t you going to help me?”
Qin Muxue nodded. “Of course. Now let’s eat.”
“Okay.” Su Xiaoling smiled, and throughout the meal, she couldn’t keep the grin off her face. Clearly, she was delighted to have secured such a good storefront for only sixty thousand a year.
The next day at noon, to express her gratitude to Chen Yang, Su Xiaoling specially invited him and Qin Muxue to a restaurant for lunch.
When Chen Yang received the invitation, he secretly thought that at least Su Xiaoling had a conscience—she knew to buy him a meal.
At noon, in an elegant private room on the second floor of the Xiaonanlou Hotel, Chen Yang and Qin Muxue arrived together. Su Xiaoling stood up as soon as she saw them. “Sister Xue, Chen Yang, you’re here?”
Chen Yang sat down at the round table and joked, “So you do have a conscience. I thought after helping you, you wouldn’t do anything to thank me.”
Su Xiaoling glared. “Why do you talk so much?”
“It’s fun,” Chen Yang replied with a laugh.
Su Xiaoling rolled her eyes at him, then turned to Qin Muxue. “Sister Xue, now that I’ve got the storefront, I need help with renovations and enrollment. You have to help me.”
Qin Muxue immediately replied, “Xiaoling, do you even need to ask? Of course I’ll help.”
“With you around, Sister Xue, everything is wonderful,” Su Xiaoling said, touched.
“What about me?” Chen Yang joked, feeling a bit bored just sitting there.
Su Xiaoling rolled her eyes again. “You? Go chill somewhere else.”
“It’s quite cool here already,” Chen Yang laughed.
Su Xiaoling shot him a disgruntled look, then frowned at Qin Muxue. “Sister Xue, see how thick-skinned he is?”
“All right, Chen Yang, just focus on your meal. Why so many words?” Qin Muxue chided him.
“Okay, okay,” Chen Yang agreed cheerfully.
He found joking with Su Xiaoling rather amusing.
Soon, plate after plate of hearty dishes arrived. Su Xiaoling was quite considerate, encouraging both Qin Muxue and Chen Yang to eat as much as they liked.
Chen Yang didn’t stand on ceremony and, feeling a bit hungry, dug in heartily.
But just as Su Xiaoling was chatting and laughing with Qin Muxue while eating, she suddenly frowned and clutched her stomach.
Qin Muxue immediately asked, “Xiaoling, what’s wrong?”
Su Xiaoling tried to act casual. “It’s nothing, just a bit of a stomachache. Sister Xue, I’m going to the restroom.”
“Go ahead, are you all right?” Qin Muxue asked, concerned for her cousin’s health.
“It’s nothing, I’ll just go to the restroom,” Su Xiaoling replied lightly, getting ready to stand up.
But just as she was about to rise, Chen Yang suddenly said, “Sit down. Don’t move around. This is menstrual cold. If you move, it’ll only make the pain worse.”
Both Qin Muxue and Su Xiaoling looked at Chen Yang in surprise. Neither had expected that Chen Yang would know how to diagnose illnesses.
Su Xiaoling, a bit skeptical, looked at Chen Yang. “Are you sure? You think it’s menstrual cold and not just a stomachache?”
Chen Yang smiled slightly. “Your face is pale, your lips are colorless, and aren’t your hands and feet cold too? These are all signs of menstrual cold. Trust me—sit still, drink some hot water, and avoid spicy dishes.”
Su Xiaoling was astonished. “Wow, Chen Yang, I didn’t know you could diagnose illnesses.”
Chen Yang explained, “Do you know what I liked to do in my spare time? I loved reading medical books.”
“You liked reading books?” Su Xiaoling was surprised. In her mind, Chen Yang was always a good-for-nothing, lazy and unmotivated.
She hadn’t expected that he actually read medical books in his free time.
Chen Yang smiled. “Of course. I told you, you don’t really know me at all.”
Su Xiaoling glanced at him dismissively, but took his advice and sat quietly in her chair.
Qin Muxue was pleased; she could see that Chen Yang was not as useless as she had once believed—he actually had some ability.
For five years, Qin Muxue had always been disappointed in Chen Yang. But with everything that had happened recently, her disappointment was gradually fading, and she was beginning to feel that Chen Yang was quite capable.
After sitting for a while, Su Xiaoling’s stomach did indeed feel better. She started eating again, but after what had just happened, she avoided the spicy dishes.
In the blink of an eye, another night passed.
For Chen Yang, the night was uneventful. He had easily helped Su Xiaoling solve her rental problem, and now his full attention could turn to the development of the new city in the northern suburbs.
The next morning, as usual, Chen Yang arrived at Huading Corporation at eight.
Around ten in the morning, Shen Donghua suddenly pushed open the door to his office and quietly reported, “Director Chen, from the Southwest Chamber of Commerce, Cui Shangkai is here to see you.”
“Who? Cui Shangkai?” Chen Yang’s eyes narrowed at the name. The man’s visit set his imagination racing.
