No one had expected Wu Tian to suddenly appear before the leader of the six-commander unit and drive a single blade clean through his body. Even the commander himself had not foreseen it.

“Y-you... how could you... in the end...?” blood gushed from the six-commanders’ leader’s mouth as he pointed at Wu Tian, unable to form another word.

With a thunderous crack, Wu Tian drew his Black Dragon Blade; the leader’s corpse collapsed to the ground, eyes still bulging, still staring in disbelief at what had happened.

Ding.
“Congratulations, player Wu Tian: instant-kill on one of the city’s six commanders of eighth-tier Martial Spirit rank. Gained 100,000 experience. Instant-kill count +1.”
“Congratulations, player Wu Tian: leveled up to Lv.27, Seventh-Tier Martial Spirit.”
“Congratulations, player Wu Tian: obtained one Blood-Spirit Core Stone, a terrestrial-grade forging material, and one Sunstone, a profound-grade forging material…”

“Damn it,” Wu Tian muttered in his mind as soon as the system announced it. So the instant-kill skill really does trigger great loot, and the higher the target’s rank, the better the rewards. He had barely prepared to forge weapons, and it had already yielded top-tier refining material straight away. The system certainly knew his mind exactly. If the system had a body, Wu Tian would have hugged it to pieces.

And when he instant-killed someone of higher rank, the experience gain was greater as well—this pushed him straight to Lv.27. That was genuinely good news.

He was glad, but not everyone was.

The four surviving commanders of the six, faces struck as if by lightning, glared at Wu Tian with pure fury.

“You bastard Wu Tian, we’re through with this! We will fight you to the death!” the four shouted. Two longtime brothers had fallen beside them, and now they meant business.

“Back for more? Fine. Don’t expect mercy from me.” Wu Tian gave a cold smile. These men didn’t know they were dead men.

“Blood Frenzy!” Wu Tian said nothing else and instantly unleashed the second form of the Black Dragon Sword Technique.

One stroke. Two. Three.
Roaring surges of blade-energy tore forward. With the fresh strength from his level gain behind him, Wu Tian’s attack felt even more overwhelming. The four men never had time to react before his ferocious blade-force swallowed them whole.

Ding.
“Congratulations, player Wu Tian: defeated the remaining four of the six commanders. Gained 30,000 experience, 50,000 taels of silver, one Profound-grade thunder-rush knuckle set, and one Profound-grade refined-iron sword.”

The survivors had lower ranks than their captain, so the experience total was not even half of what a single captain had yielded. Wu Tian was momentarily disappointed. Still, the dropped gear was decent, if only Profound-grade; at least it could be sold for some money.

“Unbelievable... he killed the six city guardians! This is beyond terrifying!”
“My God— the six guardians are all gone. What kind of monster is this child?”
“Damn it! We’ll avenge all six generals. Brothers, move! Kill that traitor!”

The city guards were in full uproar. The six-city guardians were their proudest strength, yet Wu Tian had annihilated all of them in an instant. Everywhere he looked, their eyes burned with rage.

Glaring across the dark throng of guards, Wu Tian thought, “Damn, there must be a thousand of them. I’d better get out now, before one sneer from them drowns me like a man in the sea.”

Wu Tian decided to leave Xinye City first. Xiao Hui should have already escaped from it by now—this was the moment to go. Before leaving, he planned to look for Wei Aosong, but that wretch had clearly already fled. Seeing he had gone, Wu Tian gave up the chase.

Now that Wu Tian had reached Seventh-Tier Martial Spirit, there was no way those guards could keep up. After a few quick shifts, he hid in an empty corner and used disguise magic to assume another face. He even changed his clothes. Then, acting as though nothing was wrong, he prepared to leave the city.

“Damn! Where’s that traitor now? How did he vanish all of a sudden?”
“Quick—notify every checkpoint guard inside the city. No suspicious person is to leave!”
“Search house to house! I don’t believe he vanished into thin air!”

As soon as Wu Tian transformed, the guards began leaping from one place to another, hunting for him in frantic circles. They never found the slightest trace.

He moved as an ordinary citizen, at a calm, unhurried pace.

“Stop!”

“Who are you? What are you doing on the streets in the middle of the night?” several guards called.

“Honored officers, I’m Tian Wu. I’m leaving the city on an errand. Times are tight, so I have to go out at night to earn something to feed my family,” Wu Tian replied in a deep voice.

“Come forward and let us inspect you.”

The guards studied him closely, even using qi-sensing. But Wu Tian had the system with him; they could not detect his qi at all. To them, the man he had become was perfectly ordinary.

“All right, you may go. But if you see anyone suspicious, report to us at once, understand?”

“Yes, officer.”

With a cheerful grin, Wu Tian replied and continued on.

That’s how he passed several checkpoints without incident. He was so cooperative during inspection that no one doubted him.

After stepping out of Xinye’s gate, he looked back at the massive gate, his features returning to Wu Tian’s own, and said with a laugh, “Heh heh. No way your checks could catch the system’s disguise trick. Search the whole night again if you want—you won’t find me. What idiots.”

……

Not long after Wu Tian left, the lord of Xinye City—Wei Aosong’s father—was raging in the city hall.

“What are you saying? One of my city’s six commanders I’ve relied on for years was slain by a worthless disciple of the Qitian Sect?” The city lord barked at his own son.

“Father, I didn’t expect this either, but it’s the truth. I’ve still ordered the city guards to encircle the whole city. Even if he is powerful, he cannot escape Xinye. As soon as he shows up, we’ll know.”

“And the man himself? Have you found him?” the city lord asked, frowning.

“Not yet,” Wei Aosong admitted, shaking his head. “But I believe he’s still inside. Just hiding.”

“You…” the city lord trembled with fury. “I don’t even know what to call you. You’ve had no trace of him for this long. You truly think he’s still in the city? After killing the six guardians, do you think he’ll fear the other guards? You’ve angered such a formidable expert, a disciple of the Qitian Sect! What am I supposed to say about you?”

Wei Aosong shrugged. “He’s just a disciple of the Qitian Sect. What is there to be so amazed by?”

“Just a disciple of the Qitian Sect? You… damn it…” The city lord’s anger nearly split his lungs. Looking at his son’s pathetic face, he finally only sighed and fell silent.

“Father, if he’s at war with the city guard, then he’s at war with the whole Kuangwu Empire. Why not report this immediately and issue a nationwide capture order? We can snare that traitor alive.”
