Chapter 69: Sect Assignment
The commotion caused by the Nie family at Qitian Sect ultimately ended without resolution. After all, they had no evidence to prove that Qitian Sect was behind the assassination of Nie Huixiang. However, because Nie Huixiang was indeed killed, Qitian Sect dropped the matter of demanding the Nie family hand someone over three days later. After all, Nie Huixiang was already dead—who could they possibly hand over? They couldn’t very well bring his corpse to apologize.
A whole night passed without capturing the assassin, and the attempt to stir up trouble at Qitian Sect had come to nothing. Furious, Nie Yuntian flew into a rage upon returning to the Nie residence.
“Outrageous! Absolutely outrageous! My son Xiang has been murdered—if I ever find out who did this, I’ll tear them limb from limb!” Nie Yuntian roared.
“Master, please calm yourself. The young master is already gone. If you harm your body with anger, that would be even worse,” the steward advised helplessly.
“How could I not be angry? This is clearly the work of Qitian Sect! I once thought Qitian Sect acted honorably, but they’re nothing but hypocrites and frauds! Since they killed my Xiang, I won’t let them get away with it!” Nie Yuntian slammed a palm against the wall, leaving a deep imprint in the stone.
“Master, who do you think is most likely responsible for this?” the steward asked.
“To infiltrate the Nie residence without a trace, shatter Xiang’s defensive formation, and escape from my hands—how many in Pingyang City possess such skill? In all of Qitian Sect, only Ye Wushang could do it. But that old fox is too well hidden; I can’t find a single flaw in his actions!” Nie Yuntian’s eyes were cold as he spoke.
“You’re right, Master, but Ye Wushang is the sect leader of Qitian Sect. There’s nothing we can do against him.”
“Hmph! Who says we can do nothing? Once Xiang’s funeral is over, I swear I’ll make that old bastard Ye Wushang pay!” A cold glint flashed in Nie Yuntian’s eyes as he spoke icily.
With that, Nie Yuntian stormed off in anger.
…
While chaos reigned in the Nie household, Wu Tian was busy researching the earth-grade pill “Spirit-Enhancing Pill.” He had already promised Ning Yujiao that he would provide her with an earth-grade or higher pill in two months. Wu Tian was a man who kept his promises.
Ding!
“Player Wu Tian failed to concoct ‘Spirit-Enhancing Pill.’ Alchemy proficiency +1.”
“Player Wu Tian failed to concoct ‘Spirit-Enhancing Pill.’ Alchemy proficiency +1.”
“Player Wu Tian failed to concoct ‘Spirit-Enhancing Pill.’ Alchemy proficiency +1.”
…
However, it seemed that earth-grade pills were not so easily made. Despite Wu Tian’s intermediate alchemy skills, he had failed over a hundred times without a single success, even with the assistance of the Heaven-grade Inferior Gathering Yang Cauldron.
“After so many failures, I haven’t produced anything but waste. Maybe my alchemy level is still too low—I need to raise it to advanced before I try again. Otherwise, all the herbs I got from Jiming Pharmacy will go to waste,” Wu Tian mused after countless failures.
Having identified the crux of the problem, Wu Tian decided to pause his attempts at Spirit-Enhancing Pills and focus on concocting Profound-grade pills to increase his alchemy proficiency.
“Congratulations, player Wu Tian, on successfully refining an exceptional ‘Blood-Boosting Pill.’ Alchemy proficiency +1.”
“Congratulations, player Wu Tian, on successfully refining an exceptional ‘Qi-Gathering Pill.’ Alchemy proficiency +1.”
…
With the Gathering Yang Cauldron’s support, Wu Tian found refining Profound-grade pills to be almost effortless. While the success rate wasn’t quite one hundred percent, at least one in ten attempts succeeded, and the pills he produced were all of the highest quality. Slowly but steadily, his alchemy proficiency continued to rise.
For a full day and night, Wu Tian devoted himself to pill refining. By the end, his spatial ring was filled with a mountain of Profound-grade pills, yet his alchemy skill still remained at the intermediate level.
“After a whole day and night, I’ve only gained 300 or so proficiency points. To advance from intermediate to advanced alchemy takes 10,000 points—I still need several thousand more. Looks like I need to keep working hard,” he muttered to himself.
Even with the system’s help, alchemy was exhausting, especially now that he was desperate to level up. After a day and night of continuous work, Wu Tian was utterly spent, his eyes practically glazed over from fatigue.
Raising his alchemy skill wasn’t something that could be accomplished overnight. After resting for a night, Wu Tian didn’t immediately resume pill refining. He sensed that there were suddenly far more spies lurking around his house—undoubtedly sent by the Nie family.
“It seems I’ve become a suspect in the Nie family’s eyes. Even without evidence, who knows if they might try something. For now, I’ll have to put pill refining aside and focus on leveling up. If Nie Yuntian comes after me himself, I’ll be in real trouble!” Realizing the increased surveillance, Wu Tian determined to prioritize his own safety.
Just as Wu Tian was pondering how to level up, there was a knock at his door.
Opening it, he saw a Qitian Sect disciple.
“Senior Brother, the sect master has ordered you to deliver this letter to the Pingyang Inn,” the disciple said upon seeing Wu Tian.
Ding!
“Congratulations, Wu Tian, you have received a sect mission: ‘Deliver a Letter to the Pingyang Inn.’ Mission reward: 5,000 experience. Do you accept?”
“Accept! Only a fool would refuse.” As soon as Wu Tian heard the system prompt in his mind, he accepted the mission without hesitation.
Immediately, his attribute panel displayed a new section: “Sect Missions 0/20,” meaning there were 20 sect missions available daily—delivering the letter was the first today.
Seeing the mission rewards, Wu Tian was elated. Sect missions granted a generous amount of experience—exterminating bandits, for example, granted 5,000 experience, and killing bandits would also yield experience. As Wu Tian was deliberating how to level up, this sect mission came at just the right time.
“Haha! Perfect timing for sect missions. While others get nothing for helping the sect, I gain experience. This is fantastic!”
Thus, Wu Tian eagerly threw himself into completing sect missions. Soon, all of Qitian Sect saw him constantly coming and going—delivering letters, moving things, buying supplies, and enthusiastically volunteering for all sorts of tasks, even those not typically assigned to him.
By the end of the day, Wu Tian had completed 20 sect missions, earning over 50,000 experience. Advancing from Martial Spirit level two to level three required 300,000 experience, and he’d earned 50,000 in one day. At this rate, leveling up would only take a few days—absolutely exhilarating.
And so, Wu Tian spent the next several days running around completing sect missions. Though tired, he gained a wealth of experience. In just six days, he had advanced to level three Martial Spirit, and after another four days, he was on the verge of reaching level four.
“Wu Tian, there are bandits on the outskirts of Pingyang City, harassing innocent civilians. Sect Master Ye hopes you can go eradicate them and bring peace to the people!”
“Eradicating bandits? Excellent, I like it! I’ll go right away!”
“Wait, Wu Tian, the sect master wants you to go with other disciples, not alone… Oh, never mind!” Before the elder assigning the task could finish, Wu Tian had already dashed off.
He couldn’t help it—eradicating the bandits was his last sect mission for the day. Completing it would net him 10,000 experience and an additional 20,000 bonus experience. Starved for experience, Wu Tian didn’t even wait for the elder to finish before rushing off to complete the mission.
