Chapter 126: That Is Love

The rules for the first game were played on a VCR. Zhang Le stared at the screen in stunned disbelief. If not for the earlier “Good Voice” mix-up, he would have asked He Jun whether they were fellow townsmen.

The first game was exactly the same as the opening game from the first episode of *Fight for Her* in his previous life.

A herd of alpacas seemed to stampede through Zhang Le’s mind.

“All right, everyone now knows the rules of the first game. It is time for our four female guests to place their bets. The starting point is six points for thirty seconds. Every additional point adds five seconds. If you love her, never let go! However, judging from the question I asked earlier, I imagine the four ladies already understand that this is not only a test of how much you love them, but also whether you can bear their weight.” He Jun smiled. “Now, we’ll make a slight adjustment. The four gentlemen will be able to hear the ladies, while the ladies will no longer be able to hear their husbands or boyfriends. So when our four ladies set their confidence scores, they must demonstrate how well they understand their partners and act within their limits. Once you place your score, you cannot ask for his opinion.”

“Our four male guests may also set a confidence score for themselves, but the ladies are not allowed to turn around.” He Jun continued, “All right, the scores have been placed. Oh, two pairs have submitted astonishingly similar scores. But what’s truly surprising is that one pair’s score is three times that of another!”

“Before revealing the scores, let me ask everyone another question. Whether in life or at work, when you encounter difficulties, are you the one who gives him more encouragement, or is he the one who encourages you more?” He Jun turned to Yang Xin’er. “Xin’er, you go first.”

“Of course I’m the one who encourages him more!” Yang Xin’er answered without hesitation. “Whenever he encounters a problem, he usually solves it himself, while I stand by and encourage him. Whenever I run into trouble, he hardly ever encourages me—he simply solves the problem for me. So I’m not afraid of any difficulty, because he’s there.”

I’m not afraid of any difficulty, because he’s there!

The moment Yang Xin’er finished speaking, a wave of applause broke out. Everyone immediately thought of the words that had once moved countless people: “I’m here.”

“So you placed such a high score because Zhang Le is there for you!” He Jun said with a smile.

“Did I place it that high?” Yang Xin’er asked.

“Your score is two or three times theirs! What do you think?” He Jun replied.

“Twenty-four points isn’t high,” Yang Xin’er said, somewhat puzzled.

“Twenty-four points means Zhang Le has to hold you in the air for two minutes. And your confidence score happens to be the same as his.” He Jun smiled before turning to ask the other three guests the same question.

The discussion did not last long before the scores were announced. Yang Xin’er had the highest score. Chen Fang and Lin Yang had both placed eight points, while the other two guests had placed eleven.

Because Chen Fang had placed the lowest confidence score, she immediately lost the chance to challenge the game. The other two guests then raised their scores to compete.

“What is the maximum score for this game?” one of the female guests asked.

Clearly, if one of them added points, the other would add points as well—and any further increase would surpass Yang Xin’er’s score. She was beginning to lose confidence.

“The scores Xin’er and Zhang Le gave are the maximum,” He Jun said with a smile. “The production team conducted many tests beforehand. Two minutes is the limit.”

“If you exceed two minutes, then it will be the power of love.”

“Can the power of love overcome gravity? I have my doubts!” The woman raised her score to twenty-four, then shook her head. “Twenty-four points. I’m not adding any more. Whether Xin’er or Yingran adds more, I’m stopping here.”

“Add more! Add more! Add more…”

The woman named Yingran hesitated for a moment. She looked at the audience before steeling herself and adding two points, bringing her score to twenty-five.

“If I don’t challenge it, losing more than twenty points would be such a waste.” Yingran smiled. “Even if I fail, at least I won’t regret it. It’s only two more points.”

“Perhaps those two points will determine success or failure!” He Jun said with a smile. “All right, Xin’er and Li Xia are both at twenty-four points, and Li Xia has already said she won’t add any more. What about you, Xin’er?”

Yang Xin’er smiled and casually added one point, bringing her score to twenty-five.

“Very well. Let us have Zhang Le and Wang Xiao prepare for the challenge—Fight for Her!”

At the challenge area, He Jun stood between Zhang Le and Wang Xiao.

“Zhang Le placed a confidence score of twenty-four points, so he must be full of confidence. And Wang Xiao, you placed nine points, correct?” He Jun asked.

“That’s right. But now it’s become twenty-five.” Wang Xiao gave a wry smile.

“Then do you believe your love can overcome gravity?” He Jun asked with a grin.

“Love can certainly overcome gravity!” Wang Xiao declared firmly. But the moment she finished speaking, her confidence vanished. She quickly added, “I’m just afraid my strength won’t be able to overcome her weight!”

Everyone burst out laughing at Wang Xiao’s remark. Still, they had to admit she was right. Love alone could not overcome everything.

“All right, who will go first?” He Jun asked.

“I’ll go first,” Zhang Le said. “I practice martial arts, so it should be easier for me.”

The challenge clearly required a certain amount of finger, wrist, and arm strength, as well as some ability to maintain an inverted position.

It was only a television game, and Zhang Le had regarded it as nothing more than a bit of fun. But as he gripped Yang Xin’er’s hand and slowly began to rise, higher and higher above the ground, a sudden thought struck him: If he let go, would he lose Xin’er forever?

He knew perfectly well that both he and Yang Xin’er were wearing safety harnesses and that every precaution had been taken. Even if he released her, she would not be in any danger.

Yet he did not know why. The instant he gripped her wrist tightly and she clasped his just as firmly, he looked into her eyes—and the game was no longer a mere formality.

Sometimes, when one takes even a game seriously, one can come to understand many things through it.

Zhang Le forgot everything around him. There was only Yang Xin’er in his eyes, and only one voice in his heart:

Hold on to her. If you love her, never let go.

As Zhang Le and Yang Xin’er rose higher and higher, their hands locked tightly together. The audience and the guests alike grew solemn, their earlier laughter and joking gone. Every gaze was fixed on the pair suspended in the air. In the firm grip with which they held on to each other, everyone seemed to find a moving glimpse of love.

Yet that emotion did not run especially deep. Zhang Le and Yang Xin’er completed the 125-second challenge without much difficulty.

The feeling became far more profound with Wang Xiao and Yingran.

Wang Xiao and Yingran did not succeed as Zhang Le and Yang Xin’er had, but their perseverance and the encouragement they gave each other left a deep impression on everyone.

Chen Fang, the more sentimental of the guests, was already in tears.

Although Wang Xiao and Yingran had failed the challenge, Yang Xin’er felt no pride in having a boyfriend who was supposedly better than theirs. She, too, was deeply moved.

“In a fight for her, the moving part of love is not the result of the challenge, but the courage to fight for her,” Zhang Le said. “The will to exceed your limits and still refuse to let go—that is love. Just now, I felt it in Wang Xiao and Yingran.”
