A low, distant beast cry rolled over the battlefield like a horn, ancient and desolate, steeped in the weariness of ages. Hearing that call, the zombies and wasteland beasts of the second, third, and fourth ranks grew agitated, as though they might rush forward at any moment.

Of course, the number of zombies and beasts above the second rank had also dwindled somewhat.

Even so, there were still far too many compared with the humans. They were simply beyond human resistance; all the defenders could rely on were the bursts of high-voltage electricity, using each discharge to kill however many they could.

Outside the barbed wire, zombie corpses lay everywhere. If Lu Fei were here, he would surely be delighted, for crystal cores were strewn across the ground.

But Lu Fei had been held back by two quasi demon kings and could not come here.

Qin Bailing had become the commander here, while Zhang Jiulao held the line, ready for a battle to the death at any moment. This was a war fought because they had no choice, a battle to defend their homes.

The higher ranks of the zombies and wasteland beasts still had not appeared.

Qin Bailing wore a resolute expression, though inwardly she was deeply worried. After all, there were simply too many zombies and beasts; once the stored electricity was exhausted, countless people would die.

Then, suddenly, the horn call sharpened.

All the zombies and wasteland beasts surged forward as if driven mad, throwing themselves at the barbed wire with suicidal force.

Massive zombies charged in the vanguard.

A tide of mountain-like beasts rolled forward in waves, while all the towering zombies and beasts pressed to the front, determined to smash down the wire and force their way into the safe zone.

There were also dense swarms of flying zombies and beasts, shrieking with ghastly cries.

Creaking and rattling, countless zombies and beasts slammed into the towering wire fence. Yet the moment they touched it, their bodies were seared by electricity, smoke rising from their skin.

Qin Bailing did not order the high-voltage discharge yet. She was waiting, waiting for even more zombies and beasts to gather.

A few zombies had broken through—third and fourth rank. Zeng Hongsen leaped out with his giant blade and struck one down in a single slash, while Zhao Liying drew her phoenix wood bow and shot at one of the third-rank ones.

She had drawn the bow without an arrow, but an arrow of pure energy took shape all the same, a vivid violet-red. When her fingers released it, the arrow streaked out with a sharp whistle, and one shot took down two targets.

It actually pierced two third-rank wasteland beasts, and the force was so tremendous that both beasts were blasted apart.

Many people turned to look at Zhao Liying, never expecting the nation’s goddess to be so formidable.

Zhang Jiulao could not help nodding. “That bow is impressive.”

“They’re Lu Fei’s people. I never expected their fighting strength to be this great—stronger even than the Li family’s entire household. Perhaps that’s because they’ve honed themselves out in the world,” Qin Bailing said, looking at Zhao Liying with some surprise. Since Zhao Liying was also part of Lu Fei’s group, it seemed everyone in his party was extraordinarily strong.

This steadied her somewhat, but defeating these zombies and wasteland beasts was impossible. If they could merely hold the line, that would already be a blessing.

The wire fence was in imminent danger of being knocked down at any moment. The zombies and beasts threw themselves against it without regard for their own lives; no matter what waited ahead, whether a mountain of blades or a sea of fire, they would charge straight into it. Seeing a mass of zombies crashing recklessly into the fence, packed so tightly that their bodies were pressed together, Qin Bailing knew this was the perfect moment to unleash the electricity.

This one discharge would surely kill who knew how many zombies and beasts. Just thinking of it made her feel exhilarated.

“Discharge!” she barked.

With a snap, a worker slammed down the switch.

At once, the high-voltage current burst across the wire fence, hurling jagged arcs into the distance as it swept outward in all directions.

Whole heaps of zombies and beasts died on the spot, their bodies turned black, convulsing violently. In no time at all, they were motionless.

Seeing so many corpses of zombies and beasts, Qin Bailing could not help smiling.

But the truly dangerous moment had arrived. The electricity was being recharged, and they had to hold out until the next ten-thousand-volt discharge, which would not come for another half hour.

The zombies and beasts did not attack again. Instead, five black specks appeared in the sky, hurtling in fast before landing on the ground.

With a thunderous boom, the corpses on the ground were blasted outward in all directions. The five figures landed, each radiating a terrifying presence—peak seventh rank, the stuff of legend, each with power well above seven thousand. One by one, they were all formidable.

There were two quasi zombie kings and three beast kings. Their arrival sent all the zombies and beasts prostrating on the ground, trembling uncontrollably. It was the fear of the low before the high, something born in their very nature.

Seeing these five monsters, Qin Bailing drew a cold breath.

Zhang Jiulao did the same. Though he too was seventh rank, his power was only a little over six thousand. Even fighting with his life on the line, he could never defeat so many monsters.

Could it be that Heaven truly meant to destroy humanity?

A bleak future for mankind flashed through Zhang Jiulao’s mind. Unless a peerless hero appeared to turn the tide, humanity would be annihilated.

Qin Bailing was equally grave, her gaze fixed on the five monsters.

“Humans, you’ve done quite well,” said the first zombie on the left, a towering figure named Zombie Wu, his eyes half-lidded as he looked at Qin Bailing and the others. “You’ve killed so many of our allied forces already. That’s enough to brag about for a lifetime.”

His tone was casual, almost lazy.

“Humans really are weak, yet stubborn creatures. They’re quite troublesome,” said the second figure on the right, a female quasi zombie king, her voice soft and seductive.

“Enough nonsense. Just wipe them out,” said Lu Fei’s quasi sparrow demon king, a burly brute, as he lunged forward.

“Fine. Since you bird-men want to handle it, go ahead and finish them off. I can’t be bothered to lift a finger,” said the second female quasi butterfly demon king on the right in a gentle voice.

“With the quasi sparrow demon king making his move, let’s just watch a show,” said the first male quasi bee demon king on the right.

“That sparrow is indeed troublesome—astonishingly fast, with a body covered in feathers and formidable defense,” Zhang Jiulao said. He knew these quasi demon kings were only toying with them, and likely believed that the quasi sparrow demon king alone would be enough to sweep them all away.

Qin Bailing looked to Zhang Jiulao, and Zhang Jiulao spoke gravely to her, as well as to Zeng Hongsen and the others.

“You work with me to fight that quasi sparrow demon king.”

“Okay!” Qin Bailing nodded.

Zeng Hongsen also nodded. “Understood.”

“Okay,” Zhao Liying said with a lovely nod.

“Old man, don’t force yourself. I’ll roast that sparrow and eat it.”

A beautiful figure suddenly appeared before everyone. It was extraordinarily ethereal.

“You... who are you?” Zhang Jiulao froze. He had never imagined a beauty would suddenly appear beside him. Instantly on guard, he found it terrifying that, with his strength, he had not even sensed her presence nearby.

“I am a spirit hero. You can call me Little Dragon Girl,” she said calmly.

“Oh, wow, a beauty’s here,” Zeng Hongsen said in surprise. He had never expected Little Dragon Girl to come as well.

“No choice. I was asked for help, so I have to do my part,” Little Dragon Girl said somewhat helplessly. A sword appeared in her hand as she walked toward the quasi sparrow demon king. “Little bird, should I roast you and eat you, or stir-fry you and eat you?”
